Comparison of the Four "Hero" DS9/NEM "Captain Jackets"

The four "hero" versions of the DS9/NEM "captain jacket" seen throughout this era were quite similar, but they did have some fairly major differences, as evidenced by the preceding section.

In this section, we will briefly highlight and summarize those differences.

Picard FIRST CONTACT/INSURRECTION version

The first appearance of this jacket was in the feature film First Contact, worn by Captain Picard.

Its primary distinguishing characteristic was the rounded front opening and shoulder points:

"Sisko Variant"

This was the jacket variant the Sisko wore when the DS9/NEM uniforms were first introduced on Deep Space Nine; he wore it during the episode "Rapture" and intermittently throughout the following episode, "The Darkness and the Light."

Its primary distinguishing characteristics were the fully closed front (with no V-shaped front opening) and the omission of the DS9/NEM-style sleeve cuffs.

Sisko version and Picard Nemesis version

The DS9/NEM "captain jackets" worn by the Sisko for the remainder of Deep Space Nine and Captain Picard in Nemesis were more or less identical in construction approach - duplicates, stunt versions, recycles, and Nemesis standards notwithstanding, that is.

In other words, the Sisko's jackets (and he had at least two - see our "Misc. observations and errors" section for more on this), while "imperfect" by the later-established standards of Nemesis, were otherwise pretty much the same as Captain Picard's finalized jacket.

However, seeing as certain aspects of (and standards for) the DS9/NEM "captain jacket" were not stylistically refined and finalized until Nemesis, we have "updated" the Sisko version to conform to NEM standards.

Both the "Sisko version" and the "Picard NEM version" of the DS9/NEM jacket had mitered corners at the top of the front opening and at the bottom corners of the shoulder points.

The only apparent difference between the two was that the Sisko's waistband appeared to wrap around the jacket sides AND back, while Captain Picard's waistband only spanned the side panels (not the back).

Insurrection

In summary, the four versions are distinguished by the following:

Picard First Contact:
   * V-shaped front opening with rounded front opening
   * bottom shoulder point trim rounded
   * side waistband only

Picard Nemesis
   * V-shaped front opening with top corners mitered
   * bottom shoulder point trim mitered
   * side waistband only

Sisko:
   * V-shaped front opening with top corners mitered
   * bottom shoulder point trim mitered
   * wraparound waistband (sides and back)

Sisko variant:
   * fully closed front (no V-shaped opening)
   * bottom shoulder point trim mitered
   * wraparound waistband (sides and back)
   * no sleeve cuffs
